Decoding Thickness: What Do You Need?
Water steals body heat 25 times faster than air. Choosing the right thickness is your first line of defense.
- 3mm (approx. 0.12 in): The standard for tropical diving. Perfect for water temperatures of 80°F (27°C) and above, offering protection from stingers and abrasion without overheating.
- 5mm (approx. 0.20 in): The versatile middle ground. Ideal for cooler tropical days or temperate waters where you need to retain more core heat.
- 7mm (approx. 0.28 in): Built for cold water. When the temps drop below 60°F (15°C), this maximum thickness provides the insulation required to stay comfortable.
Styles for Every Environment
- Full Suits: These provide coverage from neck to ankle, offering maximum heat retention and protection against coral, jellyfish, and sun exposure.
- Shorty / Spring Suits: With short arms and legs, these offer core warmth while leaving your limbs free. They are excellent for very warm water or surface sports.
Fit is Everything
A wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin and warming it up. If the suit is too loose, that warm water flushes out and is replaced by cold water, defeating the purpose.
