Underwater Pumpkin Carving

Scuba diving is filled with serious, life-saving, and highly technical certifications. You can become a Deep Diver, a Master Scuba Diver, or a Cavern Diver. And then, there is the Underwater Pumpkin Carving Specialty. While it might sound completely ridiculous on paper, it is actually one of the best excuses to get in the water this fall and a guaranteed way to test your dive skills.

Not Every Dive Has to Change the World

PADI and SDI have long, entertaining histories of wonderfully weird Distinctive Specialties. Depending on where you look, you can find certifications for becoming a Zombie Apocalypse Diver, an Underwater Basket Weaver, or a Golf Ball Diver. The core philosophy here is simple: not every single dive needs to be a hardcore training mission or a deep-wreck penetration. Sometimes, the ultimate goal is just to blow bubbles, hang out with your friends, and mercilessly stab a gourd at 20 feet.

The "Emergency" Skills You Will Actually Learn

Carving a pumpkin underwater isn't just about festive art; it is a legitimate masterclass in task loading and neutral buoyancy. A hollowed-out pumpkin acts exactly like a giant orange cork that wants nothing more than to rocket to the surface. Trying to carve a face into it while maintaining a strict hover forces you to completely dial in your buoyancy control.

Along the way, you will quickly discover brand new, highly creative ways to use a standard lead dive weight just to keep your canvas from escaping. Plus, if there is ever a catastrophic emergency that specifically requires underwater pumpkin carving skills, you’ll be fully prepared. It happens way more than you’d think. Best not to Google it.

Community, Costumes, and Great Food!

We aren't going to say this is just for the scuba card collectors out there, though flashing a Pumpkin Carving certification card to a Divemaster in Cozumel is a guaranteed conversation starter. The real reason we host this event every year is the dive community.

On Sunday, October 18th at Haigh Quarry, we are bringing the pumpkins and grilling some good eats. The Dive Right In Scuba event itself is completely free to attend (just pay the standard $30 quarry entry fee at the gate). All we ask is that you bring a side dish or dessert for the community potluck and dress to impress on the surface. We are voting for the best dry-land Halloween costume before we dive, and you know we always hand out killer prizes.

If you want to officially earn the most festive certification in scuba diving, the Underwater Pumpkin Carving Distinctive Specialty is just $50 and includes your digital card. RSVP on our Facebook event page so we can get an accurate head count for the pumpkins, and grab your specialty spot online. If you need tanks or a full gear setup, reserve your rental equipment with the shop early so we can haul it out to the quarry for you. Grab your dive knives, pack a side dish, and we will see you underwater.
