It is the problem that almost every new diver wrestles with. You look around at the other divers in the water with their incredible air consumption rates, enjoying hour-long dives, surfacing with a comfortable reserve, and looking completely chilled out. Meanwhile, your gauge is creeping toward the red zone just twenty minutes in. You inevitably question why you aren't that diver.
Well, the short answer is that you are new. You are actually expected to suck a tank dry in fifteen minutes. The underwater world is brand new, your adrenaline is pumping, and the excitement simply cannot be contained! It is nothing to be ashamed of. Every single one of us had our first time putting on a BCD and sinking below the surface.
You want longer dives right now, which is completely understandable. But the secret to extending your bottom time lies in experience and comfort, not simply strapping a larger cylinder to your back.
The Water Heater Trap
I have seen it time and time again while diving around the globe. The newer diver opts to rent a massive steel cylinder just to be able to match the bottom time of their air-sipping buddy who is diving a standard aluminum 80. Is this a wise move? It seems logical at first glance.
However, there is a major flaw in this plan. With a larger cylinder comes significantly more weight and drag. You are now working harder just to maintain neutral buoyancy and propel a water-heater-sized object through the water. This increased physical exertion forces your body to demand more oxygen. Bam! Your air consumption rises even faster. By trying to carry more air, you end up burning through it at an accelerated rate, completely negating the benefit of the larger tank.
The Buddy System Reality Check
Quite a few divers forget the fundamental purpose of buddy diving. Your buddy is your safety net if something goes wrong.
Let's look closely at that scenario. Your buddy happens to be carrying your emergency air supply. So, what good does it do for you to have a huge, high-capacity steel cylinder on your back when your buddy—your "get home safe" lifeline—is carrying a tiny aluminum cylinder? Without going into the complicated math of gas planning, it is safe to say that your chances of having enough reserve air to get both of you safely to the surface in an emergency are severely reduced.
With this in mind, it actually makes more sense for the air-sipping buddy to carry the larger cylinder. In the event of an emergency, you have the benefit of your buddy carrying enough air to get you both up. Yes, your dive might still be a little shorter, but it will be vastly safer.
How to Actually Fix Your Air Consumption
So, if a massive tank isn't the solution, how do you actually transition from an air hog to an air sipper? Here are the practical steps to extend your bottom time.
Drop the Extra Lead
The number one cause of terrible air consumption is being overweighted. If you are carrying too much lead, you have to pump extra air into your BCD just to stay off the reef. This forces you into a diagonal, seahorse-like swimming position, meaning you are plowing through the water instead of gliding. Do a proper weight check on your next dive and shed the extra pounds.
Dial In Your Trim and Streamline
Water is roughly 800 times denser than air. Any loose gear dangling from your BCD creates massive drag. Tuck your gauges in, secure your octopus, and work on your trim so you are perfectly horizontal in the water column. The less resistance you encounter, the less energy you expend.
Stop Finning With Your Hands
If you are using your hands to swim, you are doing it wrong. Scuba diving is all about lower-body propulsion. Hand swimming wastes a massive amount of energy and sends your heart rate spiking. Fold your arms across your chest or lock your hands together, and let your fins do the work.
Master the Art of Breathing
Never hold your breath, but learn to control it. The goal is slow, deep, continuous belly breaths. A great technique is to inhale slowly for four seconds and exhale slowly for six. A full, deep exhalation flushes out the carbon dioxide in your lungs, which is actually what triggers the urge to breathe. Slowing down your breathing cycle will dramatically improve your gas consumption.

It sounds overly simple, but it is true. The more you stress about your air consumption and stare at your gauge, the faster you will breathe. Take a moment to hover, look at the marine life, and remember why you are down there in the first place.
