Two divers underwater surrounded by fish

Let’s be honest. You’ve probably already broken your resolution to "cut out carbs" (those holiday cookies didn't eat themselves). And that gym membership you just signed up for? We give it until February 15th before it becomes just another monthly charge you feel guilty about.

But here’s the good news: Scuba diving is a lifestyle, not a chore.

Instead of resolving to do things you hate, why not resolve to do more of the thing that makes you feel like a weightless, exploring astronaut? It’s 2026. The future is here. It’s time to stop double-tapping other people’s dive photos on Instagram and start posting your own.

Here are 5 New Year’s Resolutions for the diver who wants to make 2026 their best year underwater.

1. Stop Planning and Book the Ticket

We see you. You’ve had that tab open on your browser for six months. You’ve looked at the liveaboard schedules. You’ve checked the flight prices to Cozumel, Raja Ampat, or Bonaire.

Resolution: Book the dive trip. Life is short, and visibility conditions vary. Stop waiting for the "perfect time" because the ocean doesn't care about your Google Calendar. Whether it’s a quick weekend run to Florida or the bucket-list trip to the Galapagos, put the deposit down. The anticipation alone will get you through the rest of the Chicago winter.

2. Don't Keep Toughing It Out (Get the Drysuit)

If you spent 2025 shivering in a wetsuit while your buddies were comfortable, let’s leave that energy in the past. We’ve said it before: trying to "tough it out" in a tropical wetsuit when the water is cold just turns you into a "human popsicle".

Resolution: Embrace the Drysuit Life. It’s not just about warmth; it’s about actually enjoying the dive rather than counting the seconds until you can get out. Remember, a drysuit is basically a "personal underwater onesie". It keeps you dry, lets you layer up with cozy fleece, and makes you look like a tactical pro. Make 2026 the year you stop being miserable in 45-degree water.

3. Learn a New Party Trick (Get a New Specialty)

Are you still relying on the skills you learned during your Open Water checkout dives three years ago? It’s time to level up.

Resolution: Take one new class this year.

  • For the thrill-seeker: Try Wreck Diving. There is nothing cooler than exploring history that sank on purpose (or by accident).

  • For the tech-nerd: Get Nitrox certified if you haven't yet. Extend your bottom time and feel better post-dive.

  • For the clumsy: Take Peak Performance Buoyancy. Stop kicking the reef. The fish (and your dive buddies) will thank you.

4. Convert a Land-Dweller

We all have that one friend who says, "Oh, I'd love to try scuba diving someday," but never actually does it.

Resolution: Drag them to a Discover Scuba class. Scuba is better with buddies. Plus, if you get your partner, sibling, or best friend certified, you suddenly have a built-in excuse to buy more gear and plan more trips. It’s not manipulation; it’s strategic lifestyle enhancement.

5. Actually Service Your Gear

We know, we know. "It worked fine last time!" But "last time" was 14 months ago, and there’s a weird green fuzz growing on your first stage.

Resolution: Treat your life-support equipment like life-support equipment. Bring your regs in for a checkup. Get your cylinder visually inspected before the first nice weekend of spring so you aren't stuck in line while everyone else is splashing. A well-maintained kit is a happy kit (and keeps you alive, which is a nice bonus).

The Bottom Line for 2026

This year, don't resolve to be "less" of anything. Resolve to be more. More adventurous, more skilled, and more submerged.

The ocean is waiting. Let's get wet.
